John Thompson held the District 5 seat on the Brunswick County school board in North Carolina. He was initially elected to the chamber in 2010 and re-elected on November 4, 2014. Thompson is currently the board's chairman.

Thompson's professional experience includes working as an architect in Southport, North Carolina. He graduated from North Carolina State University School of Design in 1977 with a bachelor's degree in Environmental Design in Architecture. Thompson has served on the Brunswick County Schools Bond Referendum Executive Committee, the Brunswick County Planning Board and the Brunswick County Equalization and Review Board. He has also been a volunteer and mentor through Communities in Schools (CIS). Thompson has received the Award of Merit from the North Carolina School Boards Association. He is married to Ruth Biddell Thompson.[1]
