Watertown Daily Times survey

Uttech participated in the following survey conducted by the Watertown Daily Times. The questions provided by the Watertown Daily Times are bolded, and Uttech's responses follow below:

What are your goals while on the board of education?

What I would like to see before my time on the school board ends would be having the right programs in place to support the needs of all the children in our district and the surrounding areas. We need to build in a stewardship of services so that it is robust enough to withstand the test of time while pushing the boundaries enough to continue moving forward at a steady pace while not having to make drastic changes to succeed.

What do you think are the biggest issues facing Watertown’s public schools?

As I stated at the last school board meeting, I believe the funding is the biggest obstacle when making decisions to provide the best education to our students. Currently, the biggest contributing factor regarding funding is in regards to the voucher system and the current laws that appear to be constantly changing and geared toward the voucher program. When schools are not held to the same laws, it is difficult to see into the future.

How can the school district attract more students through open enrollment?

Diversity and stability would be the key to growing our student base. I chose public school for my son because of the diversity of programs and ways of teaching provided. I am a firm believer that true education comes from diversity and so far we have worked to implement several great programs to do just that. Having programs like the Discovery Academy and the dual language programs, we ensure that we are reaching all walks of life. We don’t need to focus on growing fast but more focus on being constant and stable. Taking that approach will be vital to building a great foundation for our youth as they go out into the world as young adults.[4][5]
