Katherine R. Delgado was a judge of the Colorado 17th Judicial District. She left office on January 10, 2023.

She was initially appointed by Gov. Bill Owens (R) in July 2002 and won retention to full six-year terms in 2004 and 2010. Delgado won retention most recently in the general election on November 8, 2016.

Delgado retired from Colorado 17th Judicial District in January 2023. [1]

Biography

Delgado received a B.A. in political science and history from Colorado College in 1979 and a J.D. from the University of Denver College of Law in 1983. Delgado worked as a corporate practice lawyer and a chief deputy district attorney in Boulder County before she joined the district court in 2002.[2]

Colorado held judicial retention elections in 2016. Fifty-eight district court judges sought retention to six-year terms in the general election on November 8, 2016.

There are 164 judges on the Colorado District Courts, each appointed by the governor from a list of names compiled by a nominating commission. Initial terms last at least two years, after which judges must stand for retention in a yes-no election. Subsequent terms last six years.[4]

The court's chief judge is appointed by the chief justice of the supreme court to serve indefinitely.[4]

Qualifications
To serve on the district court, a judge must be:[4]

  • a qualified elector in the district;
  • licensed to practice law in state for five years; and
  • under the age of 72 (retirement by 72 is mandatory).

Delgado was retained with 63.99 percent of the vote in 2010.[5][6]
