I am a graduate of Kansas State University with a Business degree. I came to Wichita 30 years ago when I began my career as manager for a retail store outlet on East Kellogg. I later married a USD259 Strings Instructor who lived in the Maize area. Together we raised four fabulous children. While they were growing up I attended many USD259 concerts and thoroughly enjoyed seeing the children beam with pride as they played their instruments. I built signs, supervised field trips, helped set up and take down apparatus for concerts, and at our house I built a studio where my wife taught private lessons and held recitals. Our children became great performers. As a father I kept extremely busy running them all over town for soccer, scouts, dance, taekwondo, and youth activities at the church. In the church I supervised first graders and acted as an usher captain for the guest ministries team. Now I am blessed with two beautiful grandchildren. With all my life experience I think I have a lot to offer as a school board member. I care about these children in our schools. I want them to be successful. They are our future.
  • According to State records the average WPS student state assessment score is way below the average throughout the state. This is unacceptable. Something needs to be done to rectify the situation. We can do better. Some contributing factors for low level scores are poor attendance and extreme tardiness. We can’t expect students learn if their not in class to get instruction let alone an assignment. We may need to improve the incentives for good behavior, policy enforcement on bad behavior, and the teachers ability to set the expectations at the beginning of the year. Para educators can be used to help students lagging behind but they can only do so much.
  • As I have gone from door to door visiting with folks in my district I made it a point to ask them if they had any concerns about what is happening in our schools. A majority of those who answered my question were teachers or people related to teachers. The unanimous answer was student behavioral issues. Disrespectful students are driving teachers away. This appears to be the reason for the teacher shortage. What can we do? The answer is not clear. To get to the bottom of this I will push for the creation of a committee to conduct a survey of teachers, students, parents, counselors, and other school districts. I expect the results of their report will clearly point us in the right direction.
  • One of the reasons I stepped up and be a candidate for school board is because I heard schools in our country were beginning to overlook parents opinions when it came time to make important, sensitive decisions about their child. Therefore, I want parents to know I intend to vote in favor of transparency. I want parents to be included in the decision making process whenever it comes to sensitive issues. I would be in favor of a policy which requires the school administration department to get in touch with the parent if there’s a sexual education course being taught. I would gravitate towards policies that ensure parents must opt-in before their child is allowed to see graphic videos or presentations.
The State now requires a Building Needs Assessment to be completed before the budget is adopted. This process helps ensure that those who manage each building are focused on educational outcomes. In so doing, educational needs are identified and aligned with the budget process. This process provides more assurance that the entire staff of USD259 is being fiscally responsible.
Rick Denault, the General Manager at the Menards store in West Wichita. He is my manager. He is sharp, respectful, and he is always attentive to what is relevant at the moment. He is also bold, capable, and stays in connection with God through prayer.
The primary job of a school board member is to act in the best interests of the people in the district and especially the students when taking any action or making any decisions as a representative of the school board. They also need to Approve budgets, hire and evaluate the superintendent, adopt and maintain current policies, and adopt policies that inform district actions.
