I am a disabled veteran, former CPS student, and passionate community activist with a lifelong commitment to advocacy and service. As a current Senior status student at both Governors State University and Chicago State University, I am dedicated to furthering my education while simultaneously raising my four daughters, two of whom have special needs. A Chicago native, I take pride in my involvement with Tau Beta Sigma National Honorary Band Sorority, Inc., and my recent role as President of the Senate for Model Illinois Government representing Governors State University. With a global perspective cultivated through my study abroad experiences, I aspire to one day represent the United States as a Diplomat, preferably in a French-speaking country. As a survivor of domestic violence and sexual abuse, and a neurodivergent learner myself, I am committed to advocating for marginalized communities and amplifying their voices.
  • Equitable Education for Every Child: As a former CPS student and a mother of two daughters with special needs, I am deeply committed to ensuring that every child in Chicago has access to a high-quality education. I will advocate for inclusive policies and support systems that address the diverse needs of all learners, regardless of their background or ability.
  • Community-Driven Solutions: With a background as a community activist since high school, I understand the power of grassroots advocacy in driving positive change. I will work collaboratively with parents, educators, and community members to address issues such as educational equity, school safety, and access to resources. Together, we can empower our communities and create a brighter future for all CPS students.
  • Advocacy for Marginalized Communities: As a survivor of domestic violence and sexual abuse, and a neurodivergent learner myself, I bring a unique perspective to the table. I will be a strong advocate for marginalized communities, amplifying their voices and fighting for policies that promote equity, justice, and inclusion in our schools.
Equitable Education in CPS: As a former CPS student and mother of children with special needs, I advocate for equitable access to education. I'll focus on addressing funding disparities and ensuring support services for all students.

Community-Centered Solutions: Engaging parents, educators, and communities is crucial. I'll prioritize collaborative approaches to issues like school safety and curriculum development, fostering empowerment within CPS.

Support for Marginalized Students: Drawing from personal experiences, I'll champion policies that provide mental health resources and trauma-informed care. Every student deserves to feel safe and supported in their educational journey.
I look up to my French professor, Madame Dr. Evelyne Norris. She is a global citizen with so much poise and knowledge of the world around her. She loves to learn, like myself she influenced my dream of becoming a US Diplomat when we studied abroad in Paris, France, and with her stories of her father and the work he did for Senegal. She is a remarkable woman that has been published in multiple journals and traveled the world spreading her knowledge and she knows multiple languages. I learned the language of diplomacy from her and that I have a knack for languages as well and love learning new languages, which makes me want to learn more about the cultures that speak the languages, deep diving into the world and grasping it one language at a time.
As a Black woman deeply invested in political philosophy and social justice, I wholeheartedly recommend "Sister Outsider" by Audre Lorde to anyone seeking a profound understanding of political thought from an intersectional perspective. Lorde's collection of essays not only delves into the intricacies of identity and social issues but also offers profound insights into political philosophy that resonate deeply with me.

One of the reasons I believe "Sister Outsider" is a valuable resource is because Lorde's work transcends the conventional boundaries of political discourse. She challenges traditional notions of power, advocating for a more inclusive and nuanced understanding of politics that centers the experiences of marginalized communities, particularly Black women.

Through her essays, Lorde explores the interconnectedness of race, gender, sexuality, and class, shedding light on the complex dynamics of power and privilege. She emphasizes the importance of embracing difference and diversity in political thought, arguing that true liberation can only be achieved through solidarity and collective action.

Furthermore, Lorde's emphasis on the transformative power of empathy, creativity, and self-expression resonates deeply with me. She encourages readers to recognize the inherent worth and dignity of all individuals, advocating for a politics of empathy and compassion.

Overall, "Sister Outsider" offers a compelling vision of political philosophy that is deeply rooted in the experiences of marginalized communities. It challenges readers to critically examine systems of oppression and imagine new possibilities for social transformation. As someone committed to advancing equity and justice, I believe that Lorde's insights are not only relevant but essential for anyone seeking to engage in meaningful political discourse.

The legacy I aspire to leave is one of transformative change and lasting impact in the field of education. I envision a legacy where every student, regardless of background or circumstance, has equitable access to opportunities and resources needed to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. I aim to be remembered as a champion for equity and inclusion, who tirelessly advocated for marginalized communities and worked tirelessly to dismantle barriers to success. I hope to leave behind a legacy of innovation, where bold ideas and progressive policies pave the way for a more responsive and adaptable education system that meets the evolving needs of students. Ultimately, I aspire to leave a legacy of empowerment, inspiring future generations to continue the work of creating a brighter and more equitable future for all.
The event that I remember distinctively is the death of Aaliyah, she is my all time favorite artist that broke my little heart. I was nine years old, in the 4th grade.
My first job was in the United States Army. A little under 10 years.
One of my favorite books is "Marcus Garvey: Message to the People" because of its profound impact on my understanding of Black history, identity, and liberation. Garvey's powerful words resonate deeply with me as they advocate for self-reliance, empowerment, and unity among people of African descent. His message of pride, resilience, and self-determination inspires me to embrace my heritage, celebrate my cultural identity, and strive for justice and equality. Through Garvey's writings, I gain insights into the struggles and triumphs of the Black community, and I am reminded of the importance of collective action and solidarity in the fight against oppression and discrimination. "Message to the People" serves as a timeless reminder of the enduring legacy of resistance and resilience within the Black diaspora, empowering me to continue advocating for social change and uplifting marginalized voices.
If I could embody any fictional character, I would choose Tiana from "The Princess and the Frog." Tiana's determination, resilience, and unwavering belief in her dreams resonate deeply with me. Despite facing numerous challenges and setbacks, she remains steadfast in her pursuit of her goals and demonstrates the importance of hard work, perseverance, and integrity. Tiana's journey from waitress to successful entrepreneur and princess serves as an inspiring reminder of the power of ambition, resourcefulness, and self-belief. Additionally, her compassionate nature, strong sense of community, and commitment to helping others embody values that I aspire to uphold in my own life. Overall, Tiana's character embodies the spirit of resilience, empowerment, and hope, making her an inspiring role model for all.
Stand Up by Cynthia Erivo, it's stuck because of the dance theater production Body Language that was hosted by the TAPS students at Governors State University, I was a crew member so most of the songs stuck, but this one stuck the most because my children would continue to sing it everyday after rehearsals and the final performance. The song is very powerful and reminds me of the equity movements that I am apart of.
One significant struggle in my life has been navigating the intersectionality of identities and overcoming systemic barriers as a neurodivergent individual and a member of marginalized communities. Throughout my journey, I have faced challenges related to accessing equitable opportunities, advocating for my needs, and combating stigma and discrimination. Additionally, balancing the responsibilities of being a parent, a student, and a community activist while managing personal challenges has been a constant juggling act. However, these struggles have also been sources of strength, resilience, and growth, shaping my perspective, fueling my determination, and motivating me to advocate for systemic change and social justice.
The primary job of a school board member is to represent the interests of students, families, and the community in setting policies, overseeing district operations, and ensuring accountability. This includes establishing a clear vision for the district, advocating for equitable resources and opportunities, and fostering collaboration and engagement among stakeholders. School board members play a critical role in shaping the direction of the district, promoting student success, and advancing educational equity and excellence for all.
Students, parents, teachers, staff, and community members within the district.
To support the diverse needs of our district, I would like to adopt the following strategies:

Student Support: Enhance access to resources like tutoring and mental health counseling, addressing disparities and meeting marginalized students' needs. Implement culturally responsive curriculum and foster inclusive environments through anti-bias training and student-led diversity initiatives.
Faculty and Staff: Prioritize diversity in recruitment and offer ongoing professional development in cultural competence and inclusive leadership. Forge partnerships for mentorship and growth opportunities, promoting retention and morale.
Community Engagement: Facilitate dialogue with stakeholders to address systemic barriers to equity. Establish advisory councils for shared accountability and expand access to wraparound services, strengthening community support networks.

By prioritizing equity, inclusion, and collaboration, we'll create a supportive educational ecosystem.
To build strong relationships with the broader community, I would prioritize engaging with various stakeholders (community organizations, PTAs, neighborhood associations, faith-based groups, and local businesses) through multiple avenues:

Community Forums and Town Halls: Hosting regular community forums and town hall meetings to provide updates, gather feedback, and address concerns.
Collaborative Projects: Partnering with local organizations, businesses, and faith-based groups on collaborative projects that benefit the community and promote shared goals.
Advisory Committees: Establishing advisory committees composed of community members, parents, educators, and students to provide input and guidance on key issues.
Cultural Events and Celebrations: Participating in cultural events and celebrations within diverse communities to foster connections and celebrate diversity.
Open Communication Channels: Maintaining open communication channels through newsletters, social media, and other platforms to keep the community informed and engaged.

By actively listening to and valuing the perspectives of community members, I aim to build trust, collaboration, and a sense of ownership in the decision-making process.
Good teaching encompasses a blend of qualities and practices that foster student learning, engagement, and growth. Effective teachers exhibit deep content mastery, understanding curriculum standards and adapting instruction to meet diverse student needs. They employ a range of pedagogical skills, utilizing clear explanations, hands-on activities, and meaningful assessments to scaffold learning and address individual learning styles. Additionally, building positive relationships with students is paramount, as it creates a safe and supportive classroom environment where students feel valued and encouraged to participate actively in their learning. Good teachers differentiate instruction, recognizing students' diverse needs and abilities, and provide opportunities for students to work at their own pace. They also employ ongoing assessment and feedback to monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly, using a variety of assessment methods to gauge student understanding and provide timely feedback for improvement.
Measuring good teaching involves a combination of qualitative and quantitative measures, including classroom observations, student feedback, assessment results, and teacher self-reflection. To support advanced teaching approaches, I will prioritize ongoing professional development, offering opportunities focused on innovative teaching practices, technology integration, and student engagement. I will also encourage peer collaboration, facilitating opportunities for teachers to share best practices, lesson plans, and resources. Furthermore, recognizing and rewarding teachers who demonstrate excellence in their teaching practices will be vital, offering incentives such as awards, stipends, or leadership opportunities to encourage innovation and continuous improvement. By prioritizing these strategies, we can support teachers in implementing advanced teaching approaches that enhance student learning and prepare students for success.
I strongly believe in the transformative power of arts education, particularly for black and brown students who often find their passion for learning through creative expression. Here are areas I would like to expand the curriculum:

Arts Integration Across Subjects: Incorporating arts into core subjects like math, science, and history to enhance creativity, critical thinking, and engagement.
Diverse Cultural Education: Expanding curriculum to include diverse perspectives, histories, and cultural traditions, ensuring all students see themselves reflected in their education.
Access to Arts Resources: Providing access to arts resources, such as music, theater, dance, and visual arts programs, in every school regardless of zip code or funding level.
Community Partnerships: Partnering with local artists, cultural institutions, and arts organizations to provide students with hands-on learning experiences, mentorship opportunities, and exposure to professional arts careers.
Innovative Programming: Implementing innovative arts programs, such as STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) initiatives, arts-based therapies, and digital media production courses, to prepare students for 21st-century careers.

By expanding arts education and integrating it into the core curriculum, we can inspire creativity, foster cultural understanding, and provide all students with opportunities for personal and academic growth.
Ensuring schools are properly funded is essential for providing students with the resources and support they need to succeed. Here are strategies and plans I would advance:

Equitable Funding Formula: Advocating for a more equitable funding formula that allocates resources based on the needs of students, prioritizing schools in underserved communities.
Grants and Partnerships: Seeking grants, corporate sponsorships, and partnerships with local businesses and organizations to supplement funding and support innovative programs.
Efficient Resource Allocation: Conducting a comprehensive review of district spending to identify inefficiencies and reallocate resources where needed, prioritizing classroom instruction and student support services.
Advocacy at State Level: Lobbying state legislators for increased education funding and advocating for policies that support public schools, teachers, and students.
Transparency and Accountability: Ensuring transparency in budgeting processes and engaging stakeholders in decision-making to build trust and accountability within the community.

By implementing these strategies, we can ensure that every student has access to a high-quality education, regardless of their background or zip code, and that our schools are equipped to meet the diverse needs of all learners.
The principles driving my policies for safety in schools are proactive prevention, collaboration, equity and inclusion, trauma-informed practices, technology integration, student empowerment, and continuous improvement. I prioritize proactive measures such as comprehensive threat assessments and safety drills to address risks early. Collaboration with stakeholders ensures coordinated responses and holistic support for our students. Equity and inclusion are fundamental to my approach, reflected in anti-bullying initiatives and culturally responsive practices. I recognize the importance of trauma-informed approaches to meet students' emotional needs. Integrating technology, including surveillance cameras and anonymous reporting platforms, enhances our security measures. I believe in empowering students through safety committees and restorative justice practices to foster a sense of responsibility. Continuous evaluation ensures our policies remain responsive and effective. Together, these principles aim to create safer and more supportive learning environments for all students.
Supporting the mental health needs of students, faculty, and staff is a priority in my approach. Here are several strategies I would employ:

Comprehensive Mental Health Services: Implementing comprehensive mental health services within schools, including counseling, therapy, and support groups, ensures students, faculty, and staff have access to professional assistance when needed.
Training and Education: Providing training and education on mental health awareness, stress management, and self-care for faculty and staff equips them with the tools to recognize signs of distress and offer appropriate support.
Peer Support Programs: Establishing peer support programs where students, faculty, and staff can connect with trained peers for support and guidance fosters a sense of community and reduces stigma surrounding mental health issues.
Promoting Mental Wellness: Promoting mental wellness initiatives such as mindfulness practices, relaxation techniques, and wellness workshops encourages proactive approaches to maintaining mental health and well-being.
Collaboration with Community Resources: Collaborating with community mental health organizations and agencies to provide additional support and resources outside of the school setting ensures students, faculty, and staff have access to a network of support.
Creating Safe Spaces: Establishing safe spaces within schools where students, faculty, and staff feel comfortable discussing mental health concerns without fear of judgment or stigma fosters an environment of openness and support.
Integration into Curriculum: Integrating mental health education into the curriculum helps normalize discussions around mental health and equips students with knowledge and skills to manage their own mental well-being.

Regular Check-Ins: Implementing regular check-ins with students, faculty, and staff to assess mental health and well-being allows for early intervention and support when needed.
Why don't scientists trust atoms?

Because they make up everything!
Expanded Special Education Funding and Programming: Increase funding and resources to ensure robust Special Education programming in both public and private schools, addressing the diverse needs of students with disabilities.

Streamlined IEP Processes: Improve the efficiency of accessing and implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in both public and private schools, reducing bureaucratic barriers and ensuring timely support for students with special needs.
Increased Support Staff: Boost the number of support staff, including social workers, special education teachers, and support personnel, in both public and private schools. This ensures adequate support for students with disabilities and promotes inclusive learning environments.
Equitable Support for Impoverished Neighborhood Schools: Mandate adequate support, staffing, and funding for schools in impoverished neighborhoods, ensuring equitable access to resources and opportunities for all students, regardless of their socio-economic background.

Fine Arts Programming: I am passionate about implementing policies that prioritize Fine Arts education in our district, recognizing its immense value in nurturing creativity, expression, and cultural identity among students, particularly those from marginalized communities. Therefore, I advocate for making Fine Arts mandatory in all schools, ensuring equitable access to opportunities for artistic exploration and self-expression. By incorporating diverse and culturally relevant art forms into the curriculum, we can empower students, especially children of color, to embrace their heritage, celebrate their identities, and cultivate critical thinking and problem-solving skills through artistic expression. Additionally, investing in Fine Arts education can foster a more inclusive and vibrant school community.
My ideal learning environment prioritizes equity, inclusivity, and empowerment for all students. It ensures that every student, regardless of background or ability, has access to resources and support needed to thrive. Here's how:

Equity and Access: All students receive high-quality education, addressing systemic barriers like poverty and discrimination. Resources such as textbooks and technology are available to everyone, regardless of socioeconomic status.
Collaborative Learning: Students engage in collaborative activities promoting critical thinking and communication skills. Group projects and discussions encourage teamwork and learning from peers.
Diverse Curriculum: Curriculum reflects diverse experiences and perspectives, ensuring every student feels represented. Materials from various cultural backgrounds are integrated, promoting inclusivity.
Personalized Learning: Recognizing diverse learning needs, instruction is tailored to individual interests and abilities. Differentiated instruction and flexible pacing accommodate various learning styles.
Supportive Environment: A positive school climate fosters a sense of safety and belonging. Respectful interactions among students and teachers discourage bullying and harassment.
Social-Emotional Learning: Alongside academics, students develop social and emotional skills like self-awareness and empathy. Explicit instruction and opportunities for reflection enhance these competencies.
Technology Integration: Thoughtful use of technology enhances instruction and resource accessibility. Students have access to devices and internet, with teachers trained in effective integration.
Continuous Improvement: Embracing a culture of growth, the learning environment prioritizes ongoing assessment and professional development. Feedback informs instructional practices and keeps educators abreast of current research.

By emphasizing equity, inclusivity, and empowerment, we create environments where all students can succeed.
I believe our school district handled the coronavirus pandemic poorly, resulting in significant challenges for students, faculty, and staff. Many students experienced learning loss and regression due to disruptions in education caused by the pandemic. Moving forward, I would prioritize several key actions to address these shortcomings:

Improved Remote Learning: Ensure all students have access to reliable internet and devices for online education.
Support for At-Risk Students: Provide targeted interventions for those disproportionately affected by the pandemic.
Mental Health Resources: Increase access to counseling and therapy for emotional support.
Flexibility: Adopt a flexible approach to education delivery to quickly adapt to changing conditions.
Communication: Enhance transparency with stakeholders about safety protocols and support services.
Equity: Prioritize equity and inclusion to meet the needs of all students, especially those from marginalized communities.

By implementing these strategies, I believe we can better prepare our school district to handle future crises effectively and mitigate the impact on students' academic progress and well-being.
To build strong relationships with parents in the district, I will implement a multifaceted approach that prioritizes communication, collaboration, and community engagement.

Open Communication Channels: Establish regular communication through newsletters, email updates, and social media to keep parents informed about district initiatives and events.
Accessible Engagement Opportunities: Organize parent meetings, workshops, and forums to gather feedback and involve parents in decision-making processes, ensuring inclusivity and cultural sensitivity.
Collaborative Partnerships: Work closely with parent organizations and community groups to address challenges and advocate for student needs, leveraging collective expertise and resources.
Parent Education and Empowerment: Provide resources and training to empower parents to support their child's education at home and engage effectively with the school community.

Recognition and Appreciation: Celebrate parent contributions through events and awards, fostering a sense of belonging and investment in their child's education and the district.
Innovative and creative approaches to faculty, staff, and administration recruitment are essential for attracting diverse talent and fostering a culture of excellence and inclusion within our schools. Some of my preferred strategies include:

Community-Based Recruitment Events: Partnering with local community organizations, cultural centers, and affinity groups to host recruitment events and job fairs tailored to diverse populations, providing opportunities for networking, mentorship, and professional development.
Grow-Your-Own Programs: Establishing pipelines for recruiting and supporting aspiring educators from within our district's student body, particularly targeting underrepresented students and those from marginalized communities, providing scholarships, mentorship, and pathways to licensure and employment within our schools.
Virtual Recruitment Platforms: Leveraging technology to reach a broader pool of candidates and streamline the recruitment process, hosting virtual job fairs, interviews, and information sessions to connect with candidates from across the country and around the world.
Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives: Embedding diversity and inclusion criteria into job postings, recruitment materials, and selection processes, ensuring that candidates from diverse backgrounds feel valued, respected, and welcomed within our district.
Creative Incentives and Benefits: Offering innovative incentives and benefits packages to attract and retain top talent, such as student loan forgiveness programs, housing assistance, wellness programs, and flexible work arrangements, prioritizing the holistic well-being and professional growth of our faculty, staff, and administration.

By embracing these strategies and fostering a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion, we can attract and retain a talented and diverse workforce that reflects the richness of our community and ensures all students have access to high-quality education and support.
I believe in the utmost importance of financial transparency and government accountability in fostering trust and integrity in public institutions. Transparency ensures that taxpayers have access to information about how their money is being spent, while accountability holds elected officials and government agencies accountable for their actions and decisions. By prioritizing financial transparency and accountability measures, we can promote good governance, mitigate corruption, and enhance public trust in our democratic institutions.
