Learning progression is a term used to describe the pathway a learner must navigate to achieve and/or demonstrate knowledge of a skill or subject. Progressions vary depending on subject, task, skill level or age of the learner, and can be used for virtually any task, skill or subject. Necessary components for all learning progressions include both of the following:

  1. Clear start and end points.
  2. A series of steps or tasks that guide the learner from start to finish.

Each of the tasks on the learning progression must build towards the end goal. In education, teachers can use the tasks as assessments to determine student performance in the classroom. Progressions can be used to simplify certain complex subjects or simply to outline a single assignment. When used properly, they create structure for both students and teachers that will ideally improve the education experience.[1][2][3]
