Political career
New Jersey Comptroller (2013-2015)
Larkins served as New Jersey Comptroller from December 19, 2013 until he resigned on August 28, 2015 to pursue an unspecified opportunity in the private sector. He was New Jersey's second independent state comptroller.[1][2]
In the News
In 2015, Larkins was criticized over his decision to appoint Kenneth Van Deventer, a friend of his, to oversee the Medicaid Fraud Division of the Comptroller's office. Critics pointed to Van Deventer's lack of experience in dealing with Medicaid fraud investigations and his friendship with Larkins. A spokesman for the Comptroller's office would not comment on Van Deventer's personal relationship with Larkins, but insisted that "Van Deventer was recruited to direct the Medicaid Fraud Division based on his 30 plus years of experience handling complex litigation, including health care matters, at one of New Jersey's most prominent law firms." Van Deventer only served in the position for nine days before resigning on April 2, 2015, citing family health issues.[3]
Appointments
2013
Larkins was appointed as acting New Jersey Comptroller by Governor Chris Christie on December 19, 2013 to replace Comptroller Matthew Boxer.[1][4]
