I am a licensed educator and administrator with 28 years of experience and counting in education. My career began serving as a middle school teacher for 4 years, where I taught mainly science in Kentucky, North Carolina, and Tennessee. In 2003, I began serving in central administration for Metro Nashville Public Schools in a variety of roles, including instructional technology, professional development, and data use. I also have a doctorate degree in Educational Leadership--Curriculum and Instruction. My favorite role is as mom to my 3 amazing sons who came to me through the wonderful gift of adoption. Two of my sons graduated from Nolensville HS in 2023, and my youngest will be a freshman at Nolensville HS in the fall. Besides being passionate about my sons and education, I am also passionate about serving my community and have been doing so since 2011 by financially support our schools, various nonprofit organizations, and volunteering my time to help with youth sports, including coaching various teams. All in all, I am committed to bringing my wealth of expertise in education and passion for serving our community and its children to advocate for fiscal accountability, transparency, and increased community engagement in order to protect our children now and prepare them for successful futures.
  • One thing I have seen throughout my career in education is wasteful spending of taxpayer resources. Instead of money going toward teacher and staff raises, more and more funding is being funneled to special interest groups and large corporations who can lobby politicians for money. I want to see us be good stewards of taxpayer money and invest it more in our teachers and classrooms.
  • Parents and guardians send their children to schools expecting them to do what is best for their children. However, as more and more curricular decisions are being made away from the classroom, children are being taught about topics that do not need to be addressed at school but addressed at home. Just as religion should not be taught at school because of differing beliefs, various ideological beliefs do not need to be taught at school. Transparency is key to ensuring our children are protected. I would love to see the return to empowering our teachers, parents, and community members with the development of curricular materials to ensure students are prepared for their futures.
  • Today's education system is facing a teacher shortage. For WCS to recruit and retain the best teachers for our children, we need to provide them with livable wages by and a wonderful place to work. Having experience with educational budgets, I want to ask some questions about the current budget to see where more money might be found to reallocate for teacher raises. To improve working conditions, I want to advocate for site-based leadership teams that include teachers, staff, parents, and/or community members to help lead the school and particularly with the hiring of the school administrator, who sets the tone for the school building.
Schools were originally created to serve the communities in which they reside. Therefore, as an elected public servant, I want to ensure that the school board policies reflect the voices of constituents to ensure children are protected now and prepared for successful futures. If elected, I plan to work with constituents on a regular basis to inform them of existing policies and discuss with them what changes they might want to see. All in all, I want to implement policy that is best for serving the families in our community so that Williamson County Schools is the first choice for ALL families when prioritizing the education of their children.
I published a book in July 2022 that shares my beliefs and philosophy. It is entitled, Child Champion: Advocating for a Great Education. It is available on Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/Child-Champion-Advocating-Great-Education/dp/B0B6XN1XLN.
An elected official needs to be reminded of the beginning of the US Constitution, which starts with "We the People." As an elected official, it is my job to serve my constituency by being transparent, providing on-going two-way communication, being visible and accessible in the community, and making the best, informed decisions based on data.
The role of the school board is to ensure that school districts are responsive to the values, beliefs and priorities of their communities. School board members accomplish this role through 4 core responsibilities--establishing the mission/vision/strategic planning for the district, establishing policy that governs our schools, provide budgetary oversight, and the hiring/firing the director of schools.
My life's mission statement that I developed in my 20's after reading Dr. Stephen Covey's book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, and strive to live by on a daily basis is "to live a life of integrity and make a difference in the lives of others." This legacy is the one I leave behind for my sons and others around me.
I started working when I was 12 years old as a basketball scorebook keeper. Each Saturday, my parents would drop me off at the local elementary school, and I'd keep the scorebook all day long.
The role of a school board member is to ensure that the school district is responsive to the values, beliefs and priorities of its community. A school board member accomplishes this role through 4 core responsibilities--establishing the mission/vision/strategic planning for the district, establishing policy that governs our schools, provide budgetary oversight, and the hiring/firing the director of schools. To represent the community, it is imperative that a school board member is transparent, provide on-going two-way communication with constituents, is visible and accessible in the community, and makes the best, informed decisions based on data.
First and foremost, my constituents are the families, educators, and community members who reside in district 5 of Williamson County.
I am very visible in the community through my active volunteer roles. I also plan to send out a monthly newsletter and host monthly coffee conversations to keep constituents informed and foster on-going communication.
I fully support these ideas and are 2 reasons why I am running for school board. Having worked in education at various levels, I have seen the lack of financial transparency and government accountability take more and more funding away from the classrooms. I want to bring my wealth of expertise in education to ensure that WCS is being good stewards of the taxpayer funds being provided to them. If elected, I also hope to begin to bring petition the state to send our taxpayer money back to Williamson County and quit expecting our county to fund their mandates.
