A measure to extend Jungle Island's lease and to allow the park to build a new hotel was on the ballot for Miami voters in Miami-Dade County, Florida, on August 28, 2018. It was approved.
A yes vote was a vote in favor of extending the lease of Jungle Island for 39 years with a 15-year option and allowing the park to build a new hotel in exchange for an increase in rent and other montetary contributions. |
A no vote was a vote against extending the lease of Jungle Island for 39 years with a 15 year option. |
The ballot measure was designed to change the expiration date of zoological park Jungle Island's lease from 2060 to 2099 with the option of an added 15-year extension and to allow Jungle Island to build a new hotel of up to 130 feet in height and up to 300 rooms. The measure also stated that Jungle Island would allocate annual funds to affordable housing for a total of $750,000, allocate $700,000 for repairs to adjacent Ichimura Miami-Japan Garden, and increase its annual rent payment to $1.22 million or 5 percent of hotel gross sales.[1]
