The Montana Empowering Voters to Approve Proposed Nuclear Facilities Initiative, also known as I-80, was on the November 7, 1978 ballot in Montana as an initiated state statute, where it was approved. The measure empowered voters to approve or reject any proposed nuclear power facility certified under the Montana Major Facility Siting Act.[1][2]

Aftermath

On May 7, 2021, Governor Greg Gianforte (R) signed into law House Bill 273 (HB 273), which repeals I-80's requirement for voter approval for any proposed nuclear power facility. HB 273 passed the House on February 16, 2021, by a vote of 68-32. The Senate approved it on April 15, 2021, by a vote of 30-20.[3]
