Four seats on the Montgomery County Public Schools school board in Maryland were up for general election on November 6, 2018. A primary election was held for the at-large seat and the District 3 seat as more than two candidates filed to run in those races. The primary race for the open at-large seat included Brandon Orman Rippeon, John Robertson, Julie Reiley, Karla Silvestre, Marwa Omar Ibrahim, Ryan Arbuckle, Stephen Sugg, and Timur Edib. Reiley and Silvestre advanced to the general election. In her bid for re-election, incumbent Judy Docca faced Maria Blaeuer in the District 1 general election. Incumbent Patricia O'Neill and candidate Lynn Amano competed in the District 3 general election. They defeated Laura Simon in the primary election. The open District 5 general election included Brenda Wolff and Paul Pykosh.[1][2]

District 5 candidate Brenda Wolff received endorsements from Maryland State Delegate Craig Zucker, Maryland State Delegate Anne Kaiser, Maryland State Delegate Eric Luedtke, Maryland State Delegate Pamela Queen, the Service Employees International Union, the Montgomery County Education Association, the Montgomery County Public Schools Retirees, the LGBTQ Democrats of Montgomery County, Coalition of Asian Pacific American Democrats of Maryland, Association of Black Democrats of Montgomery County, and CASA in Action.[3]

About the district

Montgomery County Public Schools is located in Maryland. The district was the largest school district in the state in the 2014–2015 school year and served 154,434 students.[4]

Pivot Counties

There are no Pivot Counties in Maryland. Pivot Counties are counties that voted for Barack Obama (D) in 2008 and 2012 and for Donald Trump (R) in 2016. Altogether, the nation had 206 Pivot Counties, with most being concentrated in upper midwestern and northeastern states.

In the 2016 presidential election, Hillary Clinton (D) won Maryland with 60.3 percent of the vote. Donald Trump (R) received 33.9 percent. In presidential elections between 1789 and 2016, Maryland voted Democratic 52 percent of the time and Republican 21 percent of the time. In the five presidential elections between 2000 and 2016, Maryland voted Democratic all five times.[5]
