The Judicial Update

March 31, 2011

Virginia: Presiding judge Melvin R. Hughes, Jr. of the Richmond Circuit Court is suing a newspaper that allegedly defamed him in an article. The Voice newspaper published the article one week after a jury in the Hughes' courtroom returned a guilty verdict in a defamation case involving the news source.

According to the complaint, "At the time Green and the Voice published the second Voice article, they either knew that the statements were false or, if Green and/or the Voice claim that they believed them to be true, then Green and/or the Voice acted with reckless disregard of whether the statements were false or not."[1]

Hughes claims that the articles damaged his reputation as a judge and he seeks one million dollars in actual damages against The Voice and its president, Jack Green. In addition, he seeks to $350,000 from each entity for punitive damages for the irreparable harm caused to his reputation.[1]
