One of Karla's priorities is to improve access to health care. She will continue to support community-based behavioral health services, better drug prices and the renewal of Medicaid Expansion.

Another priority for Karla is to ensure a high-quality education from preK to K-12 to higher education. The state must strengthen funding for K-12 schools, which face challenges in teacher retention & student well-being.

Karla also believes we should build an economy that works for everyone. This includes addressing the daycare crisis by strengthening assistance for families & providers and creating a paid family leave program in ND.
Karla is passionate about ensuring access to affordable health care, ensuring high-quality education at every level, and building an economy that works for everyone with policies that help the vulnerable, families and small businesses. Specifically, Karla has sponsored paid family leave legislation so people don't have to choose between their job/paycheck and caring for themselves or a loved one, and she has provided leadership on criminal justice reform efforts, including a pretrial pilot program that helps improve lives while saving money. She also sponsored and helped pass legislation to improve care for people with diabetes and a bill to help more veterans access hearing aids, glasses and dentures.
Communication skills are critical. Lawmakers need the ability to deeply listen to a variety of viewpoints, share the reasons for their final decision, and keep constituents updated on what happens during the fast-moving legislative sessions.
One of North Dakota's main challenges will be aligning the state budget with the state's needs. Ensuring a consistency in state services can be challenging when much of the state revenue is based on volatile prices in the energy and ag sectors. Today, many workers can work from anywhere, so we should aim for North Dakota to be their home by choice and make appropriate investments to further that goal. The ND Legislature should use the state’s assets for affordable housing and high-quality public education, as well as accessible daycare & health care, making ND a more attractive place to live & work. The ND Legislature should also avoid passing extreme policies that make ND an unwelcoming place.
Lawmakers must be collaborators. Karla has built strong relationships with lawmakers from across ND with a wide range of political views. She finds common ground with her colleagues to craft solutions to the state’s problems. Karla also seeks to understand the impact of policies through deep learning and relationship building. For example, as a ND House Judiciary committee member, Karla proactively meets with law enforcement, prosecutors, defense attorneys, judges, and corrections & parole officers, as well as offenders, victims and advocates.
