Patrick Flanagan
Patrick Flanagan was a judge of the Second Judicial District Court in Nevada. He was first elected to this position on November 7, 2006, and took the bench on January 1, 2007.[1] He served on the court until his death in 2017.[2]
Education
Flanagan graduated from Duquesne University in 1975 and moved to San Diego where earned his J.D. at California Western School of Law.[3]
Career
Flanagan worked in the appellate division of the Washoe County Public Defender's Office. He rose to chief appellate deputy, practicing before the Nevada Supreme Court before accepting the position of assistant federal public defender in 1983. On April 20, 1987, he appeared before the United States Supreme Court in a death penalty habeas case which he won. He was also lead counsel in the nation's second-longest criminal trial which lasted 16 months (United States v. Baker, 10 F3d 1347 (9th Cir. 1991)).
In 1989, Flanagan left public practice, joining the Reno office of a large Las Vegas law firm as a litigator in state and federal court. In 1998, he joined the state-wide law firm of Hale Lane, where he continued an active trial and appellate practice in civil, criminal and administrative law.
In 2006, Patrick was elected district court judge in Department 7 of the Second Judicial District Court.[3]

Personal accomplishments
An active athlete, Flanagan was president of the Reno Tennis Club. He enjoyed skiing and has competed in fencing and martial arts. On September 13, 2001, Patrick was in a bicycle accident which left him paralyzed as a quadriplegic. Immediately upon his release from Craig Rehabilitation Hospital, Flanagan went back into the gym and began training again. In June 2003, while in his wheelchair before 5,000 people in Santa Clara University Gym, Flanagan tested and was awarded his 3rd degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do.[3]
