Campaign themes
2014
Gilman's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[1]
Criminalize Hydrofracking
- Excerpt: "Water is a right, not a commodity. Down State / Up State, hydrofracking threatensto turn New York — one of the most water rich states in the U.S. — into a toxic waste dump, forcing people to pay for water further disempowering the 99%"
Legalize Cannabis and Hemp
- Excerpt: "Not only is cannabis a benign substance compared to alcohol and tobacco, the medicinal benefits of cannabis far outweigh it’s negative effects. Hemp for fuel, hemp for building materials, hemp for paper, hemp for clothing. The New York Greens are for taxing and regulating for-profit business cannabis and against taxing and regulating home-grown. personal use, not for sale or trade cannabis."
End the Drug War
- Excerpt: "Historically, prohibitions have been and still are based on manufactured hysterias in order to oppress targeted ethnic and political groups. 80% of the people in prison for drugs are Black and Latino yet Black and Latino do not do 80% of the drugs. The Green Party calls for replacing criminal justice models with family and community based interventions to deal with problem drug use. We call for pardons for all non-violent drug offenders."
State Bank
- Excerpt: "Create a state-owned bank to finance public projects and private businesses at lower cost than private banks. Between 35% and 40% of the cost of public projects is interest on borrowing. When the state owns the bank, it gets this interest back, and then can finance more projects at less cost than borrowing from private investors. The state bank would be capitalized by the deposit of state tax revenues, a portion of state pension funds, and private individuals, businesses and pension funds that want to invest in the future of New York. This capital would then be invested in production ventures in New York State that benefit the people."
