Paul King is a lifelong New Yorker who, through his family and neighbors, has seen how the American dream works for everyday Americans when education, faith, family, opportunity and hard work come together.

Paul ran for Congress in 2022. "Meeting people throughout our diverse district proved to me that most of us --regardless of party-- have the same values, the same goals for our families. We can push past false divisions and make life better for every family."

A successful business owner and long-time civic leader, Paul has helped people work together toward common goals throughout his adult life. He has taken on leadership positions in youth sports and civic associations. In business, Paul founded a management consulting company in 1993. This successful firm has helped hundreds of government and corporate clients solve problems by understanding the causes of systemic problems.

In the local community, Paul has spent decades contributing to Rockaway Little League, Belle Harbor POA and Community Board 14. He is also a strong, consistent voice for unity and American values. Paul and his wife, Margaret, have three children and two grandchildren.

Paul King is a true believer in America but clear-eyed about the challenges we face together. His combination of optimism, civic engagement, problem-solving prowess, ability to collaborate across political and ethnic lines, and proven leadership skills make him an ideal candidate for the United States Congress.
  • Make America the Land of Opportunity for All – I have systemic solutions to overcome the barriers to opportunity that have plagued some families / regions for generations.
  • Restore Border Sanity and Public Safety – You can't focus on your American Dream when you have to worry about your family's safety and when resources are being redirected from citizens to illegal immigrants. We must reverse the policies that have undermined safety and fairness.
  • E pluribus unum: End Racial and Class Warfare – America was built on the principle that there is no aristocracy; we all have a God-given right to pursue our dreams. Politicians, activists and the media promote a different message because it brings them power and money. Together we can crush their lies and build a just society.
I am passionate about the American Dream. I believe it is the birthright of every American to have a fair chance to succeed in her or his "pursuit of happiness." As a professional problem solver, I understand how to identify and remove the root causes of systemic failure...and thus deliver that fair chance to all citizens.

I am also passionate about the fact that we Americans are in this together. We have common goals --safety, education, opportunity, homeownership, and community. Forces on the political extremes are pulling us apart because they need to divide and conquer. Their ideas are too weak to win over a united America. We can and must come together to assure a more just society for each other and our children.
First and foremost, my father Jack. He grew up poor and faced various setbacks over the years, but he kept moving forward. When I was born, he was working three jobs to keep food on the table. As he got older and was able to support his family with fewer jobs, he put more time into the community. He loved America and wanted everyone to get her or his fair shot.

Other models include:

Ronald Reagan because he saw the best potential of America and he said, "You can get a lot done if you don't care who gets the credit."

Jack Kemp because even though he believed in free markets he understood that sometimes you have to give underprivileged families a hand up and a stake in the system.

The Four Chaplains of the SS Dorchester who had the courage to sacrifice their own lives to save others and also offered comfort to those whose end was near.

John Lewis who stood up for his principles and did not shrink in the face of intimidation.

Jesus Christ who, despite all his power, did not come to be served, but to serve.
No, but I am a fan of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. I also liked the book We Can All Do Better by Bill Bradley.
The characteristics that are most important for an elected official include:

- Respect for the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.
- Devotion to country and citizens ahead of party affiliation.
- Ability to address root causes and then solve problems rather than only spending taxpayer money to relieve symptoms.
- Honesty and integrity.

- Ability to "walk in someone else's shoes," thereby better understanding the citizen's experience and better understanding differing opinions from colleagues.
As a Congressman, I will succeed because I am a:

- Problem solver who knows how to tackle systemic problems.
- Consensus builder with a track record of bringing people together.
- Regular American who can relate to the struggles of our citizens.
- Hard worker who takes his responsibilities and obligations very seriously.
- Thought leader who is dedicated to America ideals, not political ideology.
- Honest and as incorruptible as any human can be.

- Christian who does not see being Congressman as an end, but as a means to serving others.
The core responsibilities of a congressman are:

- Responsiveness to and advocacy on behalf of constituents' needs.
- Developing laws /solutions that deal with short-term pain while also solving long-term, systemic problems.
- Collaborating with representatives from other regions to serve the needs of the nation as a whole.
- Fiscal responsibility on behalf of today's citizen's and our posterity.
- Fidelity to the U.S. Constitution.

Despite what many current Congressman believe, a core responsibility of this office is NOT at act like an ATM that dispenses taxpayer dollars to assure reelection. Money is just a starting point. Improving the lives of constituents is the real goal.
I would like my legacy to be that I helped the coming generations have a fair chance to achieve their American Dreams, just as my grandparents, parents and I had. In achieving this, I showed that it possible to work across political and racial dividing lines. Indeed, if I can break through these dividing lines that will be my greatest contribution.
Apollo 11 landing on the moon. I was 5 years old. The Mets won the World Series two months later in 1969.
Growing up, I was a paper boy and then a grocery store cashier for three years. I had a couple of jobs during college, but my first full-time job was at a software company in Manhattan. I started as a technical support rep and was promoted to manager a few months later. My time at this company lasted 7 years, during which I worked in multiple divisions, acquiring a variety of skills. In 1993, I founded my own company -- Orion Development Group.
To Kill a Mockingbird. It paints vivid pictures of the ugliness that can exist in humans and how people --especially the main character-- can find the goodness within themselves and stand up to evil.
Atticus Finch because I would want the courage to stand against the tide to confront injustice. Also, because he was a loving single parent.
Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes.
For four years, I was a single parent.
The House has the "power of the purse" and its members must work together to serve the diverse needs of 435 constituencies. This is a tremendous challenge. As the voice of the people, the House also has the unique responsibilities of impeachment and choosing the president in case of an electoral college tie.
I think it is necessary to understand how government operates and how consensus is reached. However, it is more important to understand the experiences of regular citizens. Politicians who spend decades in DC are often out of touch with the day-to-day challenges of their constituents. That is why they fail to delivery policies and funding that create meaningful improvements to American citizens.
There will always be great challenges in the world that the United States must overcome. Russian aggression, international terrorism, and competition from China are three big challenges in the news today. America will always be able to overcome these challenges as long as we are a strong, unified nation. The extreme partisan/racial politics of the latest decade have strained our bonds of unity and led to policies that weakened our future. Over the next decade, repairing that damage is the United States' greatest challenge.
It has worked for almost 250 years, so I won't argue with success. My only concern with the relatively short length is that it creates an atmosphere of continuous campaigning and continuous fundraising. This can corrupt long-time representatives.
Traditionally, I believed term limits came in the form of elections every 2, 4 or 6 years. It is troubling that citizens give Congress a 20% approval rating but reelect their representatives more than 90% of the time. Those numbers don't add up and I now support term limits.

However, the better way to fix the system is to assure fair elections. We shouldn't have to lose the best elected officials because of an expiration date. We must also be able to vote in new talent when the current officials are falling short. This means leveling the playing field when it comes to campaign financing and preventing corruption that makes the will of the people irrelevant.
I would not model myself after another representative but there are two I would emulate in specific ways:

- Rep. Jack Kemp who worked to make sure every American had opportunity, regardless of race or economic class.

- Sen. Alan Simpson who worked well across party lines.
At a recent Community Board meeting, a first-time homeowner described how so-called progressive policies resulted in higher taxes, lower quality of life, insufficient public education, and reduced property values. He and his neighbors are working class families. Everyone is striving to realize the American promise. However, the government is pushing them backwards. "They are killing our dreams," he said. That reinforced my desire to make the American Dream attainable for every American.

Also, on Election Day I was confronted by a younger black woman who felt Republicans just want to help rich white people. We spoke about multiple issues and found plenty of ground. In the end she said, "I probably won't vote for you, but I will think about what you said." That was worth 1,000 votes.
I don't tell jokes. I always laugh and blow the punch line!
I believe compromise on policy is acceptable/necessary if you have common goals. Most liberals and conservatives generally want the same outcomes for our citizens but differ in the methods to achieve those outcomes. A good leader can find that common ground and use it to build consensus for effective solutions. So, compromise is often necessary to gain broad support for the best tactics. However, compromises on principle are never desirable nor acceptable.
This responsibility means that Representatives must find ways to raise enough revenue to meet our citizens needs without exacerbating the United States' terrible debt situation and without stifling growth and opportunity. Since economic growth generates more tax revenue, I would prioritize revenue strategies that are growth friendly. That is how we balanced the budget and delivered prosperity in the late 1990s.
The House should use its investigative powers to root out corruption and to assure precious taxpayer funds are not wasted due to poor execution of laws/administrative responsibilities. It is imperative that investigations not be politically motivated, lest they damage the credibility of the institution as a whole.
I am most interested in committees that can facilitate the American Dream, namely:

-Education and Labor
-Financial Services
-Small Business

-Select Committee on Economic Disparity and Fairness in Growth
I think these are areas where there is great room for improvement. The Federal government wastes hundreds of billions of dollars every year. Too much of that spending is not understood by citizens. What is understood is that debt-inflating spending is failing to improve the lives of most citizens. In business, this failure of accountability would not be tolerated. We need a scorecard that will help citizens understand the performance of their representatives and enable them to better hold us accountable.

Campaign website

King's campaign website stated the following:

THE AMERICAN DREAM

The pursuit of Happiness – promised to all Americans in the Declaration of Independence –comes in many forms. No one is guaranteed to achieve their American Dream but everyone deserves a fair shot. We can and must make the American Dream a reality for all Americans. Here’s my five-point plan:

  1. Vision
  2. Education
  3. Job Opportunities
  4. Home Ownership
  5. Entrepreneurship/Access to Capital

Vision

Too many Americans are told that there is no point in pursuing their dreams; instead, they should settle for lesser lives and dependency on government programs. This is truly un-American. We must:

  1. Teach young people why America is their land of opportunity
  2. Support programs that provide role models and mentors
  3. Develop a practical roadmap for individual success

Education

Education is the key to opportunity. Our primary focus should be on pre-K through 12th grade, not higher education. That is where our broken system is undermining opportunity for a large portion of our student population. To restore effectiveness, we must:

  1. Break the national teachers’ unions stranglehold on public education policy
  2. Enable more school choice and innovation
  3. Supplement in-person education with targeted online programs
  4. Give parents the tools they need to assure student success

Job Opportunities

The best way to escape poverty, accumulate wealth, and build self-esteem is to land a good-paying job. Unfortunately, many well-intended government programs undermine job creation. Instead, the United States must:

  1. Keep corporate tax rates competitive and reduce the tax burden on small businesses
  2. Cut back excessive regulation that limits business expansion and wastes taxpayer money
  3. Remove employment disincentives and help working people escape poverty

Home Ownership

For many people, homeownership is synonymous with the American Dream. It leads to wealth creation and financial security in the golden years. There are places in America where homeownership seems an impossible dream due to multi-generational poverty and limited assets. We will:

  1. Institute a program of forgivable loans to assist people in these circumstances
  2. Enable a 20% down payment, thereby reducing mortgage payments
  3. Forgive loans over 10 years based on payment and maintenance requirements

This program will make homeownership and wealth creation a realistic goal for families who are currently on the outside looking in, regardless of how hard they work.

Entrepreneurship / Access to Capital

Like my grandfather, so many immigrants flock to SE Queens to create their American Dream and control their own economic destiny. We live in a capitalist society; bringing that entrepreneurial spirit to life as a successful business requires capital.

Traditional banks are cautious about lending money to small businesses and that government programs are a labyrinth. We will:

  1. Consolidate and simplify Federal programs to make them more accessible
  2. Support innovative sources of capital (e.g. public banks)

These steps will give small business entrepreneurs the funding they need to bring great ideas to life.

THE COST OF LIVING

Energy, the economy and the American family’s cost-of-living are tightly connected. For many families, home energy and gasoline costs eat a significant portion of their income. Higher energy prices also increase the cost of food and any goods that are shipped. It is important to note that when the price of oil is high, it takes money out of our citizens’ pockets and puts money in the pockets of global rivals, especially Russia.

America needs to be energy independent. That means leveraging our traditional energy abundance in the cleanest ways possible, continuing to search for practical renewable solutions (wind, solar, etc.), and even opening the door to more nuclear energy – the cleanest and most-reliable generator of electricity. In parallel, our country needs to significantly upgrade electrical grids. In the digital world, we are more dependent on electricity than ever. Aging electrical infrastructure is a strategic risk that puts lives in danger.

Paul’s policies to lower the cost of living through better energy strategies will be posted here in October.

FOREIGN THREATS

Today, our country is plagued by foreign policy mistakes from the 1990s. In hindsight, we got it wrong on Russia, al Qaeda and China. The latter was our worst miscalculation. We believed opening business and cultural doors to China would allow our liberal and free-market ideas to flow in, thereby transforming an authoritarian regime. The opposite is happening. China’s illiberalism is flowing out into the free world and the CCP is using capitalist profits to corrupt nations around the globe.

Here in SE Queens, China’s actions impact economic advancement. Their ability to use low-cost (and sometimes no-cost labor) drives manufacturing jobs overseas and depresses wages at home.

Paul’s policies to combat these challenges will be posted here in October.

AMERICAN AFFAIRS AND IMMIGRATION

Immigrants play an indispensable role in the ongoing revitalization of America. Paul knows this firsthand from the experiences of his grandfather, who arrived on Ellis Island as a 10-year-old boy who spoke no English. His life story is an American Dream. Unfortunately, millions of migrants are living an American nightmare at our southern border.

America needs to do four things:

  1. Secure the southern border, including aggressive action against the coyote cartels
  2. Clear out and close the detention centers that have become de facto refugee camps
  3. Reform the system so that immigrants must come to the “front door”
  4. Work with our Central American neighbors to improve living conditions in those countries, thereby stemming the root cause of illegal immigration.

Paul’s policies to achieve a just immigration solution in partnership with our southern neighbors will be added here in October.

CLIMATE CHANGE AND SEA LEVEL RISE

It is indisputable that global temperatures and sea levels are rising. While good scientists can disagree over how much impact human activity has on these phenomena, it is logical for humans to both reduce potentially harmful activities and research solutions that would remove greenhouse gases from our atmosphere. The second strategy is an essential “moonshot.”

The first strategy is a leap of faith. However, it is a leap worth making if every industrial country makes an equal effort. It is pointless for the United States to take radical action if China, India, etc. continue to pollute at current or increasing rates. Such feel-good strategies are not supported by science. They would devastate our economy without saving the planet.

Paul’s policies to turn the tide on climate change and to protect our coastal infrastructure will be posted here in September.

CRIME PREVENTION AND JUSTICE

Few things are more corrosive to the American Dream than pervasive crime. High crime rates destroy lives. They also undermine education, the sense of community, job opportunities and food security. Governments – city state and federal – have made too many policy mistakes in recent years, leading to increased crime, violence and death – especially in minority communities. We must:

  1. Undo the damage from “defunding” the police and eliminating cash bail
  2. Restore effective and fair police protection and crime prevention
  3. Have an honest discussion about policing across America
  4. Root causes – Address the procedural and societal issues that lead to bad policing outcomes
  5. Gangs – Break these criminal enterprises but also create avenues of escape for young people who want to transition back to a normal, non-gang life.

Paul’s policies to promote effective policing and transparent criminal justice will be posted here in September.[2]
