Four seats on the Prince George's County Public Schools school board in Maryland were up for general election on November 6, 2018. Joshua Thomas defeated incumbent Lupi Grady in District 2. Newcomer Pamela Boozer-Strother won the open District 3 seat. Belinda Queen defeated incumbent Carolyn Boston in District 6, while incumbent Sonya Williams won re-election to District 9.
Prince George’s County Public Schools chief executive officer Kevin Maxwell announced he was stepping down from that role in May 2018, leaving the school board to approve of the next CEO appointed by the county executive.[1]
Parents expressed concern with the transparency of the school board, distribution of resources, state of facilities, and alleged grade fixing.[1][2]
Because more than two candidates filed to run for each school board seat, primary elections were held on June 26, 2018.
- In her bid for re-election to the District 2 seat, incumbent Lupi Grady and challenger Joshua Thomas advanced to the general election. They defeated candidate Rob Anthony in the primary election.
- The open District 3 primary race included Catherine Bennett Nwosu, Irene Holtzman, Juwan Blocker, and Pamela Boozer-Strother. Blocker and Boozer-Strother advanced to the general election.
- District 6 incumbent Carolyn Boston and challenger Belinda Queen defeated candidates Anthony Triplin, Ava Annette Richardson, Caleb Camara, David Shelton, and Pat Fletcher in the primary election to advance to the general election.
- In District 9, incumbent Sonya Williams and challenger Arun Puracken faced off in the general election after defeating Matt Green and Don Massey in the primary election.[3][4]
