Proposition 2, City of Fairbanks, General Sales Tax Enactment (October 2009)
There was a Proposition 2, City of Fairbanks, General Sales Tax Enactment on the October 6, 2009 ballot ballot in Fairbanks City.
This proposition sought to enact a 3% general sales tax in order to fund public works such as road maintenance and construction and further public safety services. This tax would have also gone towards reducing the cities property tax levy already in place.[1] There were still questions of the legality of this proposition since Alaska laws prohibit "dedicated" taxes, meaning specific to one cause exclusive of all others. The city Council stated though that the tax benefits all so it does not fall under this state prohibition. There are arguments as to whether the tax is too high, but both sides argue about the validity. Voters had the final say.[2]
Unofficial results: This measure did not pass, 60.56% were against it.[3]
