I believe that our future is with other kids. Therefore, I feel we need a system that provides students with the opportunity to succeed. I know for this to happen the school district needs to concentrate on basic skills, especially literacy and math during the early education years. If the students have those skills they will be able to succeed later in the educational process and throughout their lives. As they grow older, we should help them work toward building skills for the rest of their lives. Some students will want to go to community college, college, or university, others want to start their future in a field that provides a quality high-paying job. Therefore, we will need to make sure there are great programs to help every student succeed and that they know how to enroll in them.
  • Focus on the basics. The students need to have basic literacy and math skill to function throughout their lives. Our goal should be that no elementary student should leave a grade level without the skills to move on. If not, they will continue to fall behind.
  • Later in the education process we should be preparing them for life outside of the San Juan School system. For some students that means they are prepared to attend college or university but for others, they should be prepared to find a quality, high-paying job. Therefore, we must have programs that each student needs, and we should make sure they understand what opportunities are available to them.
  • We need to work with the community as a team to ensure that system works for the students from beginning to end. Therefore we need to increase communication with parents, community leaders, business people, district staff, administrators, and teachers to find solutions that work for the students.
My passion is to ensure that our students are future leaders and can help bring to the community the services that make us a better place to little. That can only be done by working together to provide our students with the skills to succeed.
Not sure if there is one person. The people I admire are the ones who work toward solutions, The great ones work with others. listens to them and implements the best ideas. I read that JFK learned these skills while in office and Ronald Reagan practiced these skills throughout his career.
A Weeks in Watts. It discusses how police officers and the community began communicating and how relations have improved. Communication is the key.
Listen and honestly.

If we do not listen to the different groups in our community, how do we find the best solutions?

Be honest. I will let people know if I do not have answers to their questions. Those are times to have open communication to learn more. At the same time, don't ask others to live to a higher standard than you are willing to live to. We often hear of people who demand transparency from others but are not transparent in their lives.
I have a long history of finding solutions to problems. My business and non-profit background provide me with budgeting and planning expertise that is important for the short and long-term health of the district. In addition, I will bring marketing expertise which is badly needed so that students and parents can find the best programs for their future.
Continue to learn about your area of responsibility. Listen to others. Be willing to work with others to come to the best conclusion for the beneficiaries.
I would like to travel our community and see how it has improved because of our students.
I remember my dad leaving for what was the Cuban Missile Crisis. I was 3 at the time.
Worked at an automotive parts warehouse during the summer during high school so I had it for 3 months at a time over 3 summers.
Listen to others, we need boards that listen to parents, teachers, administrators, district staff, community leaders, and business people in order to find solutions for our schools. If we don't other schools will not get better. Too often we fall into the trap of doing what we have always done or changing just to change. if we are going to improve must accumulate new ideas and create a plan to implement them while reviewing them to make sure they lead to success.
I find that my constituents and people who what to improve the schools by working together.
Yes, people (including students) are individuals and should be treated like that. therefore you need to understand them and help them find a path that fits them/
I have been a Rotarian for many years therefore I understand the importance of working together. First, you need to ask them to table to talk, listen to them, and find the area where there is a fit to help our students.
Unfortunately, we are having a hard to filling our positions. With that said we should encourage people of diverse backgrounds to apply for our position.
State mandates. the teachers feel that they have large classrooms and a lot of required materials to cover. I would like to look at how we reduce the amount of material and concentration on the basics.
Motivating students to learn and retain the basic skills to succeed. An advanced Teaching approach can be valuable but only if others can help the student. If parents and community volunteers do not understand the technics then they can not support the teachers.
Our school districts offer technical training. Unfortunately, we do a poor job of marketing these programs both to the students and the business community. We need the business community to support these programs for them to be valuable.
Since most of our funding comes from the state, we must lobby for more funds to achieve our goals. In addition, we should work with the community leaders to see how they can help.
Safe schools are important. I would take 2 approaches, first I would like to have law enforcement officers visiting our campuses, not as enforcement officers but to get to know the students and gain their trust. If this happens maybe students can alert them to possible situations before they happen.

Also, we need more mental health training so we can identify possible situations. I have taken some and they are very helpful.
I believe that should annual refresher course to remind them of how to spot the early signs of a problem.
Technology is an important tool that the district should consistently be investigating. When prudent, the district should invest in updating its technology.
This is a complex issue. During the last situation, we had different age groups with different health risks. If we have a future situation, I would review what we learned for the last one, consult medical professionals and other groups, and work to find solutions to best help out our students.
As in the above question, we need to invite them to be part of the process. We need to ask them to participate on district committees, there should be opportunities to learn and comment on the district curriculum.

As a board member, we are responsible for letting the parent know that their opinion is important and heard. If we do not motivate them to be part of the process then how can we hear them?
