Three of the five seats on the Redondo Beach Unified School District Board of Education in California were up for at-large general election on March 7, 2017. Incumbents Michael Christensen, Brad Serkin, and Brad Waller won the election, defeating former Redondo Beach Councilman Matthew Kilroy. Christensen, Serkin, and Waller ran together as a candidate slate.[1][2]

The Redondo Beach Unified Board of Education consists of five members elected to four-year terms. Elections are held at large on a staggered basis with two or three seats up for election every odd-numbered year.[3]
To get on the 2017 ballot, candidates had to file by December 9, 2016.[4]

The Redondo Beach Unified School District is located in Los Angeles County in southwestern California. The county seat is Los Angeles. The county was home to an estimated 10,137,915 residents in 2016, according to the United States Census Bureau.[5] The district was the 181st-largest school district in the state in the 2014-2015 school year and served 9,364 students.[6]
Demographics
Los Angeles County underperformed compared to California as a whole in terms of higher education achievement between 2011 and 2015. The United States Census Bureau found that 30.3 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 31.4 percent of state residents. During the same time period, the median household income for Los Angeles County was $56,196, compared to $61,818 for the entire state. The percentage of people in poverty in the county was 16.7 percent, while it was 15.3 percent statewide.[5]
