Born and reared in Mount Clemens, I am a proud graduate of Mount Clemens High School and Michigan State University. A mother to two bonus sons and grandmother to nine grandchildren, I place a high premium on community and civic involvement. For the past 15 years, I've worked as an adjunct college professor. I currently teach English at Wayne State University and Wayne County Community College District. A lifelong social advocate, with more than 40 years of experience as a campaign volunteer and community organizer, I see the need for change in my city. Local government, now more than ever, must find ways to meet the needs of its people, particularly its most vulnerable populations: the elderly, children, and people with special needs and disabilities. As I knock on doors and talk to people all over Mt. Clemens, I hear too often that people feel left behind and unheard. Senior citizens who have questions about the new water meter app and flooded basements say their calls go unreturned. The current administration does not support the local school district and refers to it as "broken." When I take my seat at the table as city commissioner, I consider that our seat. I will make sure that all citizens' concerns are heard and addressed. There are eight unique, vibrant neighborhoods in Mount Clemens, we need to work to preserve them and to work to improve the quality of life for residents living in each one. I plan to do just that once I take office.
  • As a strong advocate for education, I will work to build a supportive partnership between city government and the Mount Clemens Community School District. As a member of the M.C. Planning Commission, I review plans for new homes to attract urban professionals. We seem to have lost sight of the fact that a city is only as good as its schools! Mount Clemens' school enrollment has increased under the new superintendent. However, a big shot in the arm would having a mayor and commission that was behind the school district.
  • Economic growth and development are dependent on small business. I plan to advocate for innovative programs to attract more small businesses and to help the ones we have to thrive. I talk to too many small business owners who feel that Mount Clemens falls short of a strong commitment to business. We must do everything possible to encourage diverse businesses to choose Mount Clemens over other locations. A vibrant, thriving city requires that Mount Clemens work to attract diverse small businesses to every neighborhood and to provide programs for residents who want to get businesses off the ground.
  • I am a proponent of local government that informs and educates its people and practices transparency. Mount Clemens has failed at all three! The website has been down, except for small portions, for months. Information about city processes, such as property acquisitions, and proposals that impact utilities, should be readily available. I will advocate for postal mailing of information to residents by including informational brochures in the water bills. I will advocate for educational videos aimed at senior citizens to explain how to navigate the city's website or use an app. Finally, I will advocate for the abolishment of non-recorded special meetings that impede transparency.
Mount Clemens officials and citizens are concerned about the number of rental properties in Mount Clemens. I think housing policies that make it easier for residents to acquire homes are a solution. Property tax relief is not impossible. Other cities have excised non-resident taxes that do not further burden homeowners yet improve the fiscal viability of the city. Rent-to-own programs help young home owners to get in homes. We need housing policies that supports home ownership and home maintenance.
I really admire Shirley Chisholm, congresswoman from New York City, who ran for president at a time when women were not take seriously in any political arena. I recall that her autobiography was entitled, Shirley Chisholm: Unbought and Unbossed. From all indication, she possessed both qualities and for that reason I admired her greatly.
I think every elected official should be a person of integrity. Elected officials also need to be conscientious to the point of taking their office seriously. A common complaint is that elected officials don't read the material that they need to digest before making important decisions on issues. Flying by the seat of ones pants is just not an option! Public officials are elected by the people as representatives. I care enough about the people who will put my in office to represent them in the best manner that I possibly can. This means doing my homework, researching best practices and procedures, conferring with other commissions that have achieved what we're hoping to do, reading and understanding my packet of information, talking to residents and soliciting feedback and ideas.
I would like to leave a legacy of educating and sharing any knowledge that I have. "Each one teach one" is a maxim that I try to live by. As a lifelong learner, one of the things I like about being in the classroom as a teacher is that you learn as much as you teach!
The first historical event that I can recall was a sad one. I remember being dismissed from school because President John F. Kennedy has been shot and killed in Dallas, Texas. I believe I was in Kindergarten. I recall the reaction from the older students, many of whom were crying on the bus.
My job was a roller rink attendant at Metropolitan Beach. It was a summer job acquired while still in high school. I worked there two summers.
Books that have stayed with me are:

Pearl S. Buck's, The Good Earth
Toni Morrison's, The Bluest Eye and
David Ritz's, Divide Soul, the Story of Marvin Gaye

I think all three resonated with me because they illustrate how fragile human life is and how we as human souls have a choice Ito either enrich a life or pull it down. Our collective hope is that most people will choose to leave someone better off than they found them.
It is often a struggle for me to reserve sufficient time for self renewal as my family, my students, and my community have always required a lot.
I believe that previous government or political experience is beneficial but lacking such experience doesn't impede a person's ability to do an excellent job in public office. I think a rich work experience at managing people, managing projects, serving the public, in volunteerism, education, law, community service, and public planning and policy, are all helpful.
It's more of a collective story but I hear from many residents that after many years away, they returned to Mount Clemens and have had the city ignite or re-ignite a deep appreciation for small town living. I lived in Chicago for almost 40 years. The charm and neighborly atmosphere of Mount Clemens has been a welcome change. People take pride in their homes and yards, and they aren't quick to honk their horns if you don't take off at break-neck speed when the traffic light changes!
I am proud of having successfully contributed to the raising of my two fine bonus sons. I am also proud of the fact that I have played a significant role in the lives of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and godchildren.
