April 18, 2023: Seventy-seven percent (77%) of voters are at least somewhat worried about free speech being used to spread disinformation and fake news, including 35% who are Very Worried. A Scott Rasmussen national survey found, however, that 58% are more concerned about the government deciding what information and news should be allowed than they are about disinformation and fake news.

The survey also found that 73% are confident they can recognize disinformation and fake news when they see it in the media. Just 26% believe that most Americans can do the same.

Methodology

The survey of 1,000 registered voters was conducted online by Scott Rasmussen on April 4-5, 2023. Field work for the survey was conducted by RMG Research, Inc. Certain quotas were applied, and the sample was lightly weighted by geography, gender, age, race, education, internet usage, and political party to reasonably reflect the nation’s population of registered voters. Other variables were reviewed to ensure that the final sample is representative of that population.

The margin of sampling error for the full sample is +/- 3.1 percentage points.
