August 25, 2017: Once thought of as a fringe activity, video gaming has become a huge business, generating $17.7 billion of sales in the U.S. alone during 2016.[1] Worldwide, industry revenue topped $75 billion.
Tencent, a Chinese entertainment company, was the largest beneficiary of all this spending with $10.2 billion in sales. Tencent also owns Chinese QQ instant messenger and WeChat services. Sony Computer Entertainment came in second with $7.8 billion in sales, while Microsoft added $6.5 billion.[2]
Nearly half (49%) of all American consumers have played a video game.[1]
And, as in just about every other area of life, the digital revolution is changing the way they play. Statista reports that “in 2009, 80 percent of video games sold were physical copies and 20 percent were digital.” But now, most are digital. And there is a rapidly growing market of mobile gamers.[1]
