August 4, 2020: With three months to go until Election Day, Real Clear Politics rates seven (7) U.S. Senate races as Toss-Ups.[1]
Six of the seven are currently held by Republicans--Arizona, Georgia, Iowa, Maine, Montana, and North Carolina.[1]
Michigan is the only Toss-Up currently held by a Democrat. Additionally, the Alabama seat currently held by Doug Jones is rated Likely Republican.[1]
Assuming Republicans do win the race in Alabama, Democrats would have to win five of the seven toss-ups to win a majority in the Senate.
If the Democrats win four of the seven toss-up races, each party would hold 50 Senate seats. Control of the Senate would then belong to whichever party won the presidency. That’s because the Vice President gets to cast the tie-breaking vote in the U.S. Senate.
