January 10, 2025: Two hundred and forty-nine (249) years ago, on January 10, 1776, Thomas Paine published Common Sense. The publication came two years after the Boston Tea Party, and eight months after the War for Independence began with the battles of Lexington and Concord. In the fall of 1775, the First Continental Congress had met, and those in the colonies were treating it as the legitimate body of government for the colonies.

Common Sense provided a powerful argument for breaking from England and creating a representative government. Five months later, on July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence gave voice to America’s founding ideals of freedom, equality, and self-governance.[1]
