July 26, 2024: 76 years ago, on July 26, 1948, President Harry Truman signed Executive Order 9981, which created the President’s Committee on Equality of Treatment and Opportunity in the Armed Services. This order, which mandated desegregation of the military, was met with negativity from many, but President Truman held firm. It would take six years before the last segregated units in the army would finally be desegregated.[1]
