June 12, 2024: Thirty-seven years ago, on June 12, 1987, Ronald Reagan delivered a speech at the Brandenburg Gate, next to the Berlin Wall, in which he famously said, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.” The speech was aired through speakers directed toward East Germany in the hope that the speech would be heard on the other side of the wall. East German police attempted to keep people away.[1]
The State Department and National Security Council wanted Reagan to remove the line, arguing it was too provocative, but it stayed and was well received. It would be another two years before the wall did indeed come down.[1]
