March 13, 2026: Nineteen states have banned RCV (ranked-choice voting). The latest state to do so was Indiana on February 24, 2026. RCV is a voting system that allows voters to rank candidates based on preference down the ballot. If a candidate wins a majority of the first-preference votes, he or she is declared the winner. If no candidate has a majority, then last place is eliminated. The process then begins again until eventually one candidate has a majority. At this time, 17 of the 19 states that have banned RCV had Republican trifectas when banning it.
