November 16, 2023: Ninety years ago, on November 16, 1933, the United States officially recognized the U.S.S.R. This followed nearly 16 years without diplomatic relations between the two countries.[1]

After the February Revolution of 1917 and the toppling of the monarchy, the U.S. became the first country to officially recognize the new Russian government in March of 1917. Less than nine months later, in December 1917, the U.S. cut off diplomatic relations following the victory of the Bolsheviks in the October Revolution of 1917.[2]

Finally, nearly 16 years later, President Franklin Roosevelt announced the United States’s official diplomatic recognition of the U.S.S.R. It was hoped at the time that this would lead to a resumption of normal trade and diplomatic relations between the two countries. However, the Cold War raged on until the eventual collapse and dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, 58 years later.[2]
