November 25, 2025: Nine state supreme court justices have lost retention elections since 1990. Thirty-eight states have requirements for Supreme Court justices to run for re-election. Of these 38, 20 have retention elections, or elections where voters vote to keep or get rid of a justice. In Pennsylvania this year, three of the Democratic justices retained their seats.
