October 22, 2018: Two countries in the world have now legalized marijuana for recreational purposes. The first, Uruguay, did so back in 2013. Last week, Canada became the second.[1]
Pot has long been legal in Canada for medicinal purposes, and official statistics suggest that 4.9 million Canadians used cannabis last year. Now that it has been legalized for recreational purposes, marijuana is expected to generate $5 billion in sales throughout Canada within a few years.[2]
In the United States, 64% believe marijuana should be legalized and regulated like cigarettes.[3] It is currently legal in nine states, but it remains a violation of federal law. An earlier Number of the Day noted that U.S. sales of legal marijuana are expected to reach $75 billion in just over a decade.
