December 20, 2017: More than 1.5 million Americans over the age of 75 are still working.[1]
A New York Times feature on this growing segment of the workforce says that many have a simple answer when asked about retiring—”Why?”[1]
Census Bureau data shows that 8.4% of Americans over 75 are still working. That’s one out of every 12 people in this age bracket. The latest figures are up from 6.4% a decade ago and 4.7% two decades ago.
Currently, 11.7% of men over 75 are working along with 6.1% of women in that age bracket.
The numbers are expected to keep growing for both men and women over the coming decade.[2]
