Adoption fraud allegations
February 14, 2012: Bass-LeSure was charged with more than 30 felony counts of fraud, perjury and conspiracy. Thirty-two counts were eventually dismissed. She was charged with lying on adoption records and giving away two twin babies to Ravonda L. Edwards, her bailiff's sister, after she and her husband had become the foster parents of the twins.[2][4][5] She submitted her letter of resignation to Governor Mary Fallin, saying she would step down effective March 1, 2012, the day before she was scheduled to be formally arraigned on the said charges.[5]
Bass-LeSure and her husband, Karlos LeSure, pleaded guilty to adoption fraud on March 2, 2012, and were put on probation. The former judge pleaded guilty to two counts of obtaining public assistance by false representation, which is a felony. The sentence provided that she and her husband would not receive criminal convictions if they satisfied the terms of their probation.[4]
