|During the first half of my career, I worked in private practice, primarily in family law, and represented clients in divorces, child custody, and domestic violence actions. I also represented parents and children in dependency, neglect, and abuse cases as well as termination of parental rights cases and adoptions.
In 2015, I transitioned to public service with the Cabinet for Health & Family Services as a regional attorney and then an attorney supervisor. As a CHFS attorney, I represent social workers and support their work for children in foster care as well as collaborate with community partners to facilitate positive outcomes for families involved in the court system. I also supervise all CHFS regional attorneys on the eastern half of the state and work to help shape statewide child welfare policies.
- The highest priority for me as a judge is ensuring all persons have equal justice under the law. The presiding judge is responsible for ensuring every person entering the courtroom is afforded all due process rights regardless of any individualized factors. In family court, the judge is also charged with issuing equitable rulings, taking into consideration any barriers or challenges a family may have. Family court is not a punitive court so equitable application of the law is essential for successful outcomes.I believe these are all pieces of ensuring a family court participant receives equal justice under the law.
- Additionally, I believe a family court judge has a the responsibility to ensure children and families are safe and decisions are made with their best interest in mind. I have worked in child welfare for the majority of my career and my experience in child welfare has given me the skills and tools to see what our families need and work to facilitate safer homes for our children.
- I also believe it is vital to ensure the family court is connected to our community and that it works collaboratively with community partners. The governing laws of family court allow for a considerable amount of teamwork amongst stakeholders in the community and to support and uplift families. It's essential for a family court judge to have experience working with other service providers.
