I’m Vincent Powell and I’m a father of six. My oldest is in 7th grade and my youngest is 2 months old which means my children are going to be in the Tahoma School District for the next two decades. That’s a long time and I want to make sure my children and each child in this district receives an amazing education. My family and I love living in Maple Valley and have had positive interactions with each of our children’s teachers and schools. We live in a good school district but there is definitely room for improvement. After speaking with many in the community and reviewing data on our school district, I see a few areas in need of change. Namely, academics, safety, and our facilities. Did you know approximately 40% of Tahoma School District students are failing to meet grade level standards? Did you know each of our schools have safety concerns identified by a recent audit? Additionally, our schools are nearing capacity and our student population is projected to grow by about 10% over the next 8 years. We need a school board that will be transparent with our shortcomings and prepare for the future.
  • 40% of our students are failing to meet grade level standards. Around 50-60% are failing to meet standards in math and science. That is simply unacceptable. We have great students and teachers but unfortunately our school board has not been transparent with our district’s shortcomings and they haven’t provided a plan for how to turn this around. Our children deserve better. The first step to turning this around is clear communication on our current state. We can’t solve the problem if students and parents are unaware of how serious the problem is. The next step is setting a clear and specific aspirational goal. So here is my goal. Let’s help 90% of students hit grade level standards by 2030. Together we can turn this around!
  • School safety is one of my top priorities. Each of our school buildings were recently audited and many safety concerns were identified at each school. Our children and the staff at the schools deserve to show up to schools each day where they feel safe. They deserve to be safe from external threats as well as internal threats. Things like buzzed entry, adequate lighting, fencing, and cameras serve to deter and prevent external threats and should be prioritized. Better protection from internal threats is also needed as evidenced by the horrible incident at our schools where a paraeducator was sexually abusing children.
  • The Tahoma student population is projected to grow by approximately 10% over the next 8 years spread out evenly across grades. This means each elementary school, middle school, and our high school will need to accommodate more students into their already full classrooms. We need to prepare now by supporting the efforts of the district to review needs and options for expanding capacity in our schools. There is also a need to update our schools to better meet the needs of students with disabilities. Many parents have shared with me the struggles their children face navigating buildings that weren’t designed well for students with disabilities.
