Virginia San Pedro was a candidate for at-large representative on the Elizabeth Board of Education in New Jersey. She was defeated in the general election that was held on November 8, 2016.

San Pedro previously ran for a seat on the Elizabeth school board in 2014 and 2015 but withdrew from both races before the elections.[1]

Three of the nine seats on the Elizabeth Public Schools school board were up for at-large general election on November 8, 2016. Incumbents Stanley Neron and Jose Rodriguez, along with Diane Barbosa, defeated incumbent Carlos Trujillo, Ricky Castaneda, Christina Moreira, Maria Medeiros DaRassi, Sima Farid, Maria Lorenz, and former candidate Virginia San Pedro for the three seats up for election.[2]

Opposition

The Elizabeth Board of Education consists of nine members elected at-large to three-year terms. Elections are staggered with three seats up for election each year. At-large incumbents Tony Monteiro, Elcy Castillo-Ospina and Charlene Bathelus were up for re-election on November 3, 2015. Bathelus won re-election, while Stephanie Goncalves and Daniel Nina joined the board. They defeated Monteiro, Castillo-Ospina, Maria Medeiros-DaRassi and Michelle Velez-Jonte. Virginia San Pedro initially filed as a candidate but withdrew prior to the election.[1] Castillo-Ospina, Monteiro and Velez-Jonte were running as part of the Continue the Progress slate.[4]

The election in Elizabeth featured three at-large seats up for general election on November 4, 2014. Incumbents Rafael Fajardo, Francisco González, and Paul Perreira ran against challengers Ana Maria Amin, Stefano Calella, Maria Z. Carvalho, Malik J. Jackson, Anthony Padlo, and Virginia San Pedro. Perreira won re-election, and Amin and Carvalho were added to the board.

Two slates competed for the seats. The Continue the Progress slate included Fajardo, Perreira, and Calella. The Unity for Education slate included Amin, Carvalho, and Jackson. González, Padlo, and San Pedro did not run as part of a slate, and all three candidates withdrew prior to the general election.
