William W. Carmody was the chief judge of the 11th Circuit Court in Michigan, which has jurisdiction over the counties of Luce, Mackinac, Schoolcraft, and Alger. He ran unopposed for election to this position on November 4, 2008 and took office the following January 1st.[1] He was re-elected in 2014 to a term that expires in 2020.[2] He retired from office November 19, 2020.

Education

Carmody received his bachelor's degree from Northern Michigan University. He then worked as a teacher from 1969 until earning his master's degree from Northern Michigan University in 1973. He went on to earn a Ph.D. in education administration from Western Michigan University in 1976 and a J.D. from Thomas M. Colley Law School in 1983.[3][4]

Career

Carmody began his career in 1977 as a consultant for the Department of Education in Lansing, Michigan. He left that position in 1980. After receiving his law degree, he became a court-appointed superintendent for the township of Royal Oak in 1983. He then worked as a private practice lawyer in Marquette and Munising from 1985 to 2000. At the time of his appointment to the Alger/Schoolcraft County Probate Court in 2000, he was running his own law firm. He served as a judge on the probate court until joining the circuit court in January of 2009.[3][4]
