One of the five seats on the Sioux Falls School District school board in South Dakota was up for at-large general election on June 6, 2017. Four candidates filed for the open seat: former candidate Randy Dobberpuhl and newcomers Dimitrios Gliarmis, Cynthia Mickelson, and Carol Robinson. Mickelson won the seat.[1][2]

The Sioux Falls School District school board consists of five members elected at large to three-year, staggered terms. Two seats were up for election in 2016 and 2015, respectively.
To be eligible to run for school board in the state of South Dakota, a candidate must be at least 18 years old, a resident of the school district, and an eligible voter within the district. A candidate cannot hold any other office that is incompatible or inconsistent with the duties of a school board member. A candidate also must submit a candidacy petition with the signatures of 20 qualified voters of the district. The candidate filing deadline for this election was on March 28, 2017.[3]

About the district
The Sioux Falls School District is located in southeast South Dakota in Minnehaha County. The seat of county government is Sioux Falls. Minnehaha County was home to an estimated 187,318 residents between 2010 and 2016, according to the United States Census Bureau.[5] The district was the largest school district in the state in the 2014-2015 school year and served 23,966 students.[6]
Demographics
Minnehaha County outperformed South Dakota as a whole in terms of higher education attainment from 2011 to 2015. The United States Census Bureau found that 29.4 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree or higher, compared to 27.0 percent for South Dakota as a whole. The median household income in the county was $53,525, compared to $50,957 for the entire state. County residents lived below the poverty level at a rate of 12.2 percent, while that rate was 13.7 percent for the state as a whole.[5]
