Two of the five seats on the Sioux Falls School District school board were up for at-large general election on April 12, 2016. Two incumbents, Kent Alberty and Carly Reiter filed for re-election. Candidates Randy Dobderpuhl, Diana Stelling and Peter VonPischke also filed in the race. There was no primary. Incumbents Alberty and Reiter defeated the challengers and won re-election to the board.[1]

The Sioux Falls school board consists of five members elected at large to three-year terms. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on April 12, 2016. Each year, the board can choose between two dates for an annual election holding them either on the second Tuesday in April or the third Tuesday in June.[2]

School board candidates had to file with their county elections department during the candidate filing period, which began on January 30, 2015, and ended on February 25, 2016. To vote in the 2016 general election, residents had to be at least 18 years of age, legally eligible, and had to register by March 30, 2016.[2][3]

Sioux Falls School District is located in southeast South Dakota in Minnehaha County. The county seat is Sioux Falls. This county is home to 182,882, according to the United States Census Bureau.[6] The district was the largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 23,384 students.[7]

Demographics

Minnehaha County outperformed the South Dakota as a whole in terms of higher education achievement in 2014. The United States Census Bureau found that 29.3 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 26.7 percent for South Dakota as a whole. The median household income in Minnehaha County was $53,391 compared to $50,338 for the entire state. The county poverty rate was 11.9 percent compared to 14.2 percent statewide.[6]
