The August 26, 2014, general election in Orange County featured four seats up for election. Incumbents Joie Cadle and Daryl Flynn each faced a single challenger in their re-election bids for Districts 1 and 2, respectively. Both won re-election, defeating candidates Joshua A. Katz and Phil Stump, respectively. Chadwick Hardee, Regina Hellinger, Linda Kobert and Julio Rocha were running to replace District 3 member Rick Roach, who did not file for re-election. None of them received 50 percent of the votes in the general election, so Linda Kobert and Regina Hellinger, the top two vote-getters, advanced to the runoff election on November 4, 2014. Board chair Bill Sublette did not face a challenger on August 26, 2014, but Gene Vernon Hair qualified as a write-in candidate for the November 4, 2014, election.

Campaign themes

2014

Stump's campaign website listed the following themes for the 2014 race:

Insufficient Planning for Growth

Avalon Middle has been the most overcrowded Middle School in the county for four consecutive years. Planning has been insufficient for the growth trend that insures overcrowding in two to three years at Lake Nona/Moss Park schools. This MUST change. New sites and facilities are needed.

Communication with Residents/Parents/Families

Important issues that most were unaware of have come to the Board, been discussed, decided on and implemented - with little solicitation of comment from the people of our district.

Expanding our Definition of Success

We must examine, refine and expand the way we understand success for our students, teachers, administrators and schools.

Working Effectively with the State Legislature

Our School Board must have an effective plan in place to work with local legislators - one that utilizes the strengths of staff and Board Members.

Leadership Development

Local school leadership (Principals, Assistant Principals and Deans) need and deserve ongoing leadership development opportunities that will equip them to lead effectively.
