Tom Green County underperformed in comparison to Texas as a whole in terms of higher education attainment between 2011 and 2015. The Census Bureau found that 22.1 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 27.6 percent for all state residents. The median household income in Tom Green County was $46,711, compared to $53,207 statewide. Dethloff previously served as the district's assistant superintendent of human resources and professional development. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Austin College.
