Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

Dr. Jim Sneeringer is a retired IBM software engineer. He is the designer and developer of the www.iVoterGuide.com website, which provides information about political candidates in elections nationwide. He also designed and developed the popular WORDsearch Bible Study software. He holds a PhD and is a Distinguished Graduate Alumnus in Computer Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In Austin, he has taught at the University of Texas and St. Edward’s University, and also worked for the Attorney General of Texas as an examiner to help certify computerized voting systems for use in the state of Texas.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

The job of a school district is to be effective in (1) promoting the highest levels of student learning, (2) encouraging parents to be involved in student learning and the life of the schools, (3) teaching and encouraging ethical behavior, and (4) doing all of these while keeping the burden of taxpayers low.

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

(1) Integrity, (2) respect for and civility toward all, (3) accountability to parents and taxpayers, (4) advocacy for academic excellence

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

I listen well and balance all sides and information when making a decision.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

(1) Consistently prepare for and attend meetings, (2) stay up to date on studies and points of view about education, (3) be available to communicate with constituents.

What is the primary job of a school board member in your view?

To hire the superintendent and hold him or her accountable for the goals enumerated above.

Who are your constituents?

The parents, students, and voters of the school district.

How would you support the diverse needs of your district’s students, faculty, staff, and community?

By supporting different learning and teaching styles, treating all of these groups fairly, and keeping expenses down to what is necessary to do the job.

How will you build relationships with members of the broader community? Which groups, organizations, stakeholders will you specifically target?

I do not plan to specifically target anyone, but to be responsive to all groups, organizations, and stakeholders.

What constitutes good teaching? How will you measure this? How will you support advanced teaching approaches?

In what areas would you like to expand curriculum? For example, do you see a need for advanced technical training or apprenticeships? What sort of innovative programming would you advance if given the opportunity?

There probably are some, but none that I am aware of.

What strategies or plans would you advance to ensure the schools are properly funded?

Funding is determined by the Texas Legislature and the tax rate set by the school board. I would vote for an adequate tax rate, as described in another question, and might lobby the legislature.

Challenging and supportive. Try to stretch student to achieve their best, but not ask for more than they can accomplish.

Attend events, be available before and after meetings and by phone.

What are your preferred strategies for faculty, staff, and administration recruitment?

Competitive pay and great working environment.

What are your views on financial transparency and government accountability?

Both are essential to good government, as reflected in my previous answers.
