Two seats on the Rockdale County Board of Education were up for general election on May 20, 2014. Incumbent Jim McBrayer won re-election to the Post 1 seat against challenger Alberteen Young. Post 2 incumbent Katrina McCollum Young won another term without opposition.

Rockdale County Public Schools is located in Rockdale County, Georgia. The county seat of Rockdale County is Conyers. Rockdale County is home to 86,919 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[1] Rockdale County Public Schools was the 23rd-largest school district in Georgia, serving 15,608 students during the 2011-2012 school year.[2]

Demographics

Rockdale County underperformed in comparison to the rest of Georgia in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 25.0 percent of Rockdale County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 27.8 percent for Georgia as a whole. The median household income in Rockdale County was $54,704 compared to $49,604 for the state of Georgia. The poverty rate in Rockdale County was 13.9 percent compared to 17.4 percent for the entire state.[1]

Voter and candidate information

The Rockdale County Board of Education consists of seven members elected to four-year terms. Each member represents the entire county from an at-large seat. There was no primary election and the general election was held on May 20, 2014. Two seats were up for election in 2014 and five seats will be up for election in 2016.[3]

Candidates began to file affidavits of candidacy on March 3, 2014. The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was March 7, 2014.[4]

April 26 candidate forum

Post 1 incumbent Jim McBrayer and challenger Alberteen Young participated in a candidate forum at the Antioch AME Church on April 26, 2014. McBrayer highlighted his teaching experience at district schools as a reason why he ran for the board in 2010. He advocated for improved communications with parents about the district's rigorous academic programs and accreditation for Advanced Placement courses. Young pointed to her experience as a budget director for Fulton County Schools as a valuable resource for the board. She suggested that the district needs to inform parents about declining test scores and increase expectations of students. The forum was hosted by the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. and the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.[5]

Additional elections on the ballot

The school board election shared the ballot with county, state and national primary elections on May 20, 2014. The primary ballot included races for Georgia House of Representatives and Georgia State Senate. There were also state executive elections including races for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general. The May 20, 2014, election also selected candidates for seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate.[6]
