The Nebraska Governor is the chief executive is the chief executive of the state, and commander-in-chief of the state military forces in the state of Nebraska. The governor is the chief budget officer and must present the state legislature with a complete budget for all expenditures used in running the state’s regular business.
The governor is the chairperson of the Board of State Canvassers and the Board of Pardons. The governor is a member of the State Records Board, Nebraska Capitol Commission, Education Commission of the States, State Board of Health, Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission, Nebraska Hall of Fame Commission, Nebraska Commission on Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice and other groups as provided by law.
The current officeholder is Dave Heineman, who has won another term in the 2010 midterm elections.
Nebraska Watchdog reported on Governor Heineman's feud with the Nebraska Democratic Party regarding Heineman's opposition to national health care and his push to get top educators in the state to fight the Obama health care plan. [1]
Qualifications
- at least 30 years old
- a resident of the state of Nebraska for at least 5 years
- a citizen of the United States
Duties
By law, the governor must:
- Give information by message to the Legislature
- Give accounts of all money received and spent
- Appoint certain officers as required by the constitution and statutes and fill vacancies in state offices - serve as commander-in-chief of the national and state guards
- Sign or veto bills passed by the Legislature
- Call elections to fill vacancies for members of the U.S. Congress - certify notaries
- Issue requisitions for the return of accused persons to Nebraska and other states and countries
- Enforce criminal laws
