Judges of the Oregon Supreme Court, Oregon Court of Appeals and Oregon Circuit Courts are all selected in an identical manner. They are chosen in nonpartisan elections to serve six-year terms, after which they must run for re-election if they wish to continue serving.[1]

The chief judges of the circuit courts are appointed by the chief justice of the state supreme court to serve a two-year term.[1]

Qualifications
To serve on the circuit court, a judge must be:[1]

  • a U.S. citizen;
  • a state resident for at least three years;
  • a resident of his or her circuit for at least one year;
  • a state bar member; and

Lee participated in Ballotpedia's 2016 survey of local judicial candidates. The following sections display his responses to the survey questions. When asked what non-judicial legal experience qualifies him to be a judge, the candidate made the following statement:

Deputy District Attorney and Chief Deputy District Attorney in Roseburg 1975 to 1987; self employed small town trial lawyer 1987 to present[2][3]

When asked why he was running for this particular court seat, the candidate made the following statement:

I have 41 years of local trial experience in all the areas with which the circuit court judges deal. I am admired by other lawyers for my enthusiasm for the law. I think my practical knowledge of how the law affects individuals and small businesses will be valuable on the court.[2][3]

When asked to identify one judge, past or present, who he admires, the candidate made the following statement:

Gloria McGinnis - former Justice of the Peace in Glendale. She applied the law without being vindictive and with a practical knowledge of the consequences of both breaking the law and applying the law[2][3]

When asked about his primary concern regarding today's judicial system in his state, the candidate made the following statement:

I think that there is a loss of attention to the facts that make each case and each litigant unique[2][3]
