George Mitchell Jr. is a judge for the Fifth Judicial District of Mississippi. He was appointed by Gov. Phil Bryant (R) in December 2015 to replace Clarence Morgan effective January 1, 2016.[1] Mitchell ran for election to his seat in 2016.[2] He won the general election on November 8, 2016.

Mitchell earned his bachelor's degree in political science from Mississippi State University and his J.D. from the University of Mississippi. He was an attorney in private practice from 1982 until his appointment in 2015. He previously served as the city attorney and city prosecuting attorney for the Town of Maben from 2007 to 2015. Mitchell is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.[1]

There are 51 judges on the Mississippi Circuit Courts, each elected to four-year terms in nonpartisan elections. The circuit courts share the supreme court's regulations on re-election and chief justice selection, but policies on interim vacancies and judicial qualifications differ slightly.[4]
