California Administration Office of the Courts gets new director
August 3, 2012
California: This week, the California Judicial Council ended its half-year search for a new director for the Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC), offering the position to former Judge Steven Jahr. Jahr retired from the Superior Court of Shasta County in 2009, after a twenty-two year judicial career. He joined the California court system in 1986, with appointment to the former Anderson Justice Court. As those courts transitioned to Municipal Courts, and later Municipal Courts were consolidated into Superior Courts, Jahr served and helped guide the transition. During his time on the Superior Court, Jahr was Presiding Judge for four years. He also served with the California Judges Association.[1][2]
Jahr will take over the AOC at a difficult time in the organization's history. Most recently, the California State Legislature stripped the Judicial Council of its spending authority, in a move favored by the Alliance of California Judges (ACJ).[3] The ACJ also examined statements made by Jahr in letters from last year and found that he has been opposed to reform of the administrative arm of the California court system.[4]
The Director of the Administrative Office of the Courts is responsible for overseeing the eleven departments that comprise the office. For more information on the structure of the AOC, visit: California Courts, AOC Organization Chart.
