South Dakota: Lori Wilbur is now the newest member of the South Dakota Supreme Court. Yesterday, Governor Dennis Daugaard announced the appointment, which follows two weeks of interviews conducted for four nominees. (For more, see: Governor Daugaard to interview four finalists for Supreme Court vacancy.)[1]

Wilbur seems eminently qualified to serve on the high court, having held a position at every level of the judiciary in the state. She has served as a circuit court judge, magistrate judge, attorney for state boards, and assistant attorney general. Most recently, she spent twelve years as Presiding Judge on the South Dakota Sixth Judicial Circuit.[1]

During the interview process, Gov. Daugaard was impressed by Wilbur's experience and work ethic. In his announcement, he said, "I was particularly struck by something Lori said in her interview. When I asked her why she would be a good justice, she told me that she lives by the same three rules that she asks her DUI defendants to follow: 'Show up, try hard, and be honest.; That is a simple and eloquent statement of the values that make South Dakota great."[1]

Wilbur will be sworn-in soon and will serve an initial term of three years. In 2014, she must stand for retention if she chooses to continue serving.[1]
