Eleven apply for Fifth District vacancy

Nevada: There are eleven applicants seeking to fill vacancy on the Fifth District Court. The vacancy was created by the death of Justice John P. Davis (Nevada) on January 26, 2011.[1]

The applicants are:[1]

  • Robert J. Bennett, a justice of the peace for the Fernley Justice Court
  • Jason Earnest,a deputy public defender in Nye County
  • David R. Ford, a Las Vegas attorney in private practice
  • John Friel, a deputy district attorney in Nye County stationed in Tonopah
  • Louis Minicozzi, a Henderson attorney
  • Thomas Gibson, a Pahrump-based Nye County deputy district attorney
  • William Schaeffer, a Battle Mountain attorney
  • Donald Smith, of Minden
  • Kirk Vitto, the longtime Nye County chief deputy district attorney
  • Kimberly Wanker, a Las Vegas attorney in private practice
  • Art Wehrmeister, a former district attorney in Nye and Esmeralda counties.

Background checks will be conducted and the names of three finalists will go to Governor Brian Sandoval, who will make the appointment. The applicant appointed will stand for election in 2012.[1]
