An effort in St. Paul, Nebraska, to recall Mayor Joel Bergman was initiated in January 2021. Recall organizers submitted enough signatures to put the recall on the ballot.[1] The recall election took place on May 11, 2021, and Bergman retained his position.[2][3]

Recall supporters
The recall effort was organized by resident John Thiel, who accused Bergman of abuse of power, creating a hostile work environment for the employees and city council, and failing to follow state and city statutes. Thiel also cited Police Chief Marcus Paczosa not being retained as a reason for the recall.[4]
Recall opponents
In response to the recall effort, Bergman said, "The allegations being made against my actions as Mayor are false. All allegations made towards the City for improprieties have been reviewed by City Attorney, City and State Auditors and found to be approved processes."[4]

The number of valid signatures required to force a recall election is 35% of the total vote cast for the office in the last general election.
Recall organizers were required to submit 257 valid signatures by February 2, 2021, to put the recall election on the ballot. On February 18, 2021, Howard County Election Commissioner Bev Sack said that 305 signatures were verified.[1]
